Should I buy a VHF handheld or a UHF handheld?

One of the confusing questions that confront users who are new to PMR business is whether they should buy VHF or UHF radios. In order to shed some light on this, let's first find out what VHF and UHF means respectively.

A VHF handheld radio is a portable radio that operates at very high frequencies (from 30 to 300 MHz). VHF signals travel far and fast outdoors when there are little obstacles around, though their penetrating ability is not as strong as UHF signals. On the other hand, a UHF radio operates at ultra high frequencies (from 300MHz to 3GHz). And UHF signals, with better penetrating ability, works better in indoor environments or around buildings.

As you can see, both VHF and UHF radios can be very useful, depending on the application scenarios. If you work in crowded urban environments, a UHF radio may be a better choice for you. However, if you plan to work in a vast, spacious outdoor environment, you might want a VHF handheld.

BF-5111UV is a cost-effective two-way radio that operates on both VHF and UHF bands. The user can switch bands according to his communication needs. A BF-5111UV is as good as two radios together.
